Who was Elizabeth Foster – by her daughter Florizel Adolph?
“You show them, don’t ever retaliate when someone say you won’t amount to anything, just keep quiet and show them”. – Mrs Elizabeth Foster –
Started Her Teaching Career at Reiger Park Primary School
John and Elsie Van Niekerk gave birth to Elizabeth Foster on the 16th of January 1949. She was the only living survivor of 7 children. At the young age of 18, Elizabeth Foster started her teaching career at Reiger Park primary school with her dear friend. We used to listen to all her stories and needless to say, the laughter could be heard a mile away.
She married Cecil Foster at the age of 20. A year later, the family expanded and from that marriage 4 children were born.
She Loved Church
Mrs Foster loved church but had a bigger love for God. The Methodist church was her second home. She would attend church on a Sunday, Tuesday evening prayer meeting, Wednesday afternoon the WA would meet and Saturdays was funeral. She later became the President of the Methodist Woman’s Association. Mrs Foster studied theology for two years and received her diploma passing with distinctions.
She Wrote a Letter to the Late Princess of Wales, Lady Diana Spencer
In 1980 Mrs. Foster wrote a letter to the late Princess of Wales, Lady Diana Spencer. She was a very daring and brave woman. She used to go to the office of the Mayor of Boksburg and this was during the apartheid era. The two of them would have long conversations and most of the time it was without appointment.
Mrs. Foster, is the founder member of Edu-Build Institute. After thorough research and interviews with community members, she started with this project in January 1999 and identified ten crèches in the Ramaphosa Informal Settlement, two in the Joe Slovo Settlement, and eight in the Reiger Park area where people used to just supervise and no educating as such. She held a meeting with the members and presented the program. The said program was eagerly adopted and thirty ladies were trained as pre-school teachers.
Up TO DATE MORE THAN 6661 WOMEN AND A FEW MEN HAVE BEEN TRAINED AND IS EARNING AN INCOME. SOME OPENED THEIR OWN DAY CARE CENTRES AND THAT CREATED MORE JOBS,SOME ARE WORKING AT DAY CARE CENTRES AND SOME ARE TEACHING AT PRIMARY SCHOOLS. EDU-BUILD OPENED A DAY CARE CENTRE FOR THE EDUCATORS TO EXPERIENCE PRACTICAL TRAINING AND A MORE HANDS ON APPROACH.
She had the opportunity to travel to different countries for example, Italy, Greece, Dubrovnik, Israel, Brazil, Argentina, etc. Wherever she went, she made friends. People would just walk up to her and attach themselves.
Edu-Build Institute has students teaching in Dubai, London, Amsterdam, China, etc. This is the impact Edu-Build made all because Mrs Foster had a vision. This dreams grew into 61 campuses nationally and soon internationally. This made her so proud. People used to discourage her, talk behind her back, some even gave her harsh words. Her favorite words was, “show them”. Don’t say anything. They will come back to apologies. She believed in education and changing people’s lives. Her passion was to see orphans succeed and change their outcomes. Thus her moto “reach teach and build a child today”. Her legacy will continue.
Until God Decided
At age 71, a favorite pastime of Elizabeth Foster was to pray and seek God’s Face. That is what she did until God decided to close her chapter on earth and to start a new chapter in heaven.
